New Lawn Watering Restrictions - 2x per Week

Effective July 1st, 2010, SWFMD changed year-round water conservation measures to allow lawn watering twice per week for privately owned wells and lake source irrigation.

SWFMD is the non-elected policy making board that is followed by Pinellas County Commissioners for lawn watering restrictions. SWFMD has taken jurisdiction of all water on or below the land you own.

Pinellas County Watering Schedule

Too little, too late, this change comes at the beginning of the rainy seasons after months of dry hot weather left lawns badly damaged. For over a month I have responded to numerous reports of dying turf and discovered it was water stress caused by 1x week watering limits. I see lawns under a variety of management practices and nothing has caused more damage to lawns than 1x week watering limits. Our soil is like a leaky bucket  that is empty after 48 hours. You need to fill our soils  up at least 3x per week to be maintain healthy St Augustine turf. Anything less than 3x per week will weaken and stress your lawn allowing for weed invasion, insect damage and nutrient loss. All of this in an effort to conserve a resource that is neither being depleted nor wasted because it is in a perpetual cycle.

Regardless, reset your irrigation timer to take full advantage of the new limits on your private well or lake use for lawn watering.
