A Customer called the other day and to tell me that his neighbor told him he had mole crickets! Well… his neighbor is probably right - after all mole crickets pretty much inhabit all of the southeastern US – including all of Florida.
And mole crickets damage a lot golf courses and home lawns – but not St Augustine lawns. Rarely will mole crickets be a problem in St Augustine lawns – if they are the lawn was probably in poor shape and near death to begin with…the mole crickets are not the primary agent of death in St Augustine lawns.

Lawn Kamra and Fungus - Let's say your lawn is looking weak and thin and it has these ''spots'' on the leaves - so you take a sample down to the Pinellas County Extension office and ask for advice and they tell you ''you got a fungus''.
Of course you have a fungus! Fungus is a natural part of the ecosystem - it recycles dead and dying plants by breaking down the plant into basic elements - it is called ''Composting''
So, is fungus killing your lawn? Is fungus something that needs to be treated….?

The homeowner called to tell me “The weeds are overtaking my lawn”. I tried to explain his lawn lawn was in no danger – I told him that the problem was the turf was weak - it was weak under his Oak Trees because of the roots and that the next time I was at his property I would treat the weeds – BUT I didn’t have anything to spray for tree roots and I don’t have anything to spray to keep weeds from doing what weeds do best – filling in the open areas of a weak lawn.
His reply? “You always have some excuse…” and then he hung up.

Turf Radio: Nothing seems to be more misunderstood than the role of water in keeping your lawn healthy. Rightfully so! Soil, Plant and water relationships are complicated.
Often I hear a customer say “But I have been watering and it rained last week too, so I know it is not water…”
But their turf is weak, weedy and shows every sign of being water stressed.
So how can water cause so many problems in a lawn - after all you can turn on and off with an irrigation system and rain falls from the sky?

Many people think the little Pink Flamingo sign I leave in the yard is cute, and then there is the chemi-phobic who sees a skull and crossbones warning them of the death and destruction spewing from the lawn spraying truck.
Personally, I think it is a piece of trash I had to leave in your lawn - that’s why I put it near the mail box or trash can so you can throw it away - easily.

I was furious when I pulled up to the yard! Here was a lawn I had pampered, loved on, nurtured back from the brink of extinction – and it was mowed to the bone – down to the dirt - the lawn had been scalped by the new lawn mowing guy.
So why be so upset over the lawn being mowed low?

What exactly is Lawn Spraying?
Well, “Lawn Spraying” is a made up term – it has no definitive meaning - It means different things to different people.
So what to do? Let’s pull back the curtain and expose the inner workings of A Promised Land Lawn Spraying – and perhaps I can define lawn spraying in the process

The question is: When you spray my yard and then it rains will you come back and spray it again?
The answer is “No! Why would I? That would just double the amount of fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide and that could kill your lawn.” Rain is good! Label instructions for the pesticides – and the label is law - require at least a quarter inch of rain or irrigation after an application…..so why would you want me to spray again after it rains?

The Turf Report is not important, it’s not crucial; but it is helpful – It is the world as the lawn spraying guy sees it ......That would be me – Rick Orr
I read lawns! No seriously I read your lawn every time I spray your lawn and it tells me a lot about what happened since the last time I was there. Now don’t get scared and think I see letters on a page like a book –reading lawns is a type of sign language.
