Reclaimed Water is Great for Irrigating Your St Augustine Lawn
I am always a hero when I am working with lawns irrigated with reclaimed water. Reclaimed water is great stuff: safe, plentiful, unrestricted and as far as quality - second only to natural rainfall.
Safety
I have worked with reclaimed water since 1980 when on the Fripp Island Golf Course we used reclaimed as our irrigation water source. Since that time I have worked with reclaim water in other areas of the country and I have never heard of any illness or deaths caused by reclaimed water.
Plentiful
Currently there is an abundance of reclaimed water. However there is no abundance of distribution lines in Pinellas County. If you have reclaimed water be thankful for there are many who want reclaimed water and will never have a distribution line in their neighborhood.
Unrestricted
Yes I said unrestricted; because the restrictions on reclaim water are voluntary restrictions – the agreement for use requires that the county never restrict the use of reclaim water. Something they probably would like to take back and I am sure there are county lawyers working on a loophole. But for now, restrictions are voluntary. The good news is that 3x per week irrigation is sufficient for our soils and climate, so there is no need to “cheat”. But should you miss a day or your lawn is dry, feel free to water and expect to get a warning but not a fine.
Quality
Urban myths tell of nitrogen in reclaimed water that makes it the best irrigation water. The truth is the nitrogen content is insignificant. The quality comes from the natural biological processing to create reclaimed water. Waste water is biologically filtered by microbes and for the microbes to thrive; the water must be pH balanced and free from harmful chemicals. After the microbes have completed the filtering process, the water is reclaimed, sent to your house and you irrigate your lawn with a biologically correct and pH balanced water. Perfect! So perfect it is the water I use to fill my tank.
Reclaimed Water + A Promised Land Lawn Spraying =Hero
Reclaimed water is so good for your lawn that it makes my job easy. Reclaimed water promotes healthy, thick lush stands of St Augustine turf. And healthy vigorous St Augustine lawns have few problems and if something does go wrong – irrigation fails, spills, pool overflows – the lawn will quickly recover.
The biggest problem is that weeds – dollar weed and sedges - and fungus like brown patch also find reclaim water to be good. Dollar weed and brown patch can be problematic for the homeowner to control. But for me with very advanced herbicides and fungicides, I can keep both under control and out of sight.
In summary, reclaimed water is an excellent water source for irrigation and when coupled with lawn spraying your lawn will be a lush green beautiful setting for your house. And I will be a hero!
