New and Improved Irrigation System Rain Sensor Uses the Technology of Rain Activated Windshield Wipers
by Gerald Mortenson, PE (Retired)
Over the past year, I have been trying out Hydreon’s RG-11 prototype unit and prototype software developmental versions resulting in an irrigation rain sensor unit developed with software which meets Pinellas irrigation needs.
The RG-11 optically senses raindrops hitting its clear bubble
dome and inhibits irrigation (off) within seconds, actively resuming (on) again within seconds if the rain doesn’t continue. For a heavy rain, the unit digitally accumulates total rainfall amount with the capability of suspending irrigation for up to 3 days/72hr while the soil dries out.
The updated RG-11 unit is now in production and available for sale on the internet at www.Hydreon.com. (Price $99) I think it’s a real winner for our Pinellas locale, particularly in view of the large rate increases Pinellas County now proposes for metered reclaimed water.
