Cura Sod and Sod Depot Donate Zoysia Research Plot
by Rick Orr
I receive about one call a month for zoysia lawn spraying service but I decline to accept the work. Why?, because I have no hands on experience growing zoysia in Pinellas County. I exclusively service (lawn spray) St Augustine lawns. I have “tons” of hands on experience with St Augustine lawns. Now, with this research plot from Cura Sod and Sod Depot, all of that will change. Soon, I’ll have plenty of hands on experience growing zoysia.
Zoysia requires a specific culture (fertility, insect, disease and weed control) to thrive and is different from St Augustine. Using a St Augustine fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides to grow zoysia may not kill the zoysia, but it will not allow the zoysia to reach its’ highest potential. So with zoysia, everything changes – new fertilizers, new mix designs, new pesticides.
Why A Zoysia Research Plot
The best way to find the perfect mixtures of fertilizers and pesticides for zoysia, is to take a starting point – what the books, suppliers and growers recommend – and then adjust that for Pinellas County climate and soils. This zoysia research plot donated by Cura Sod and Sod Depot will be used to formulate, evaluate and perfect fertilizer and pesticide blends and other find the best cultural practices like mowing height and watering – specifically for Pinellas County soils and climate!
Yes, It’s my Lawn
Ok, to acknowledge the obvious, this is my lawn. My neighbors all have St Augustine lawns and were more than willing to allow me to use their lawns as research plots – free of charge of course. Now I have a zoysia lawn for research. And what better way to do research than to watch grass grow, day after day, month after month, year after year from my kitchen window.
Don’t Touch That Dial – More Exciting Zoysia News
I will have monthly updates about the research plot as well as tips and tricks for growing zoysia lawns in Pinellas County. Stay tuned!
