HOA’s and Lawn Spraying
by Rick Orr
I told my colleague I was marketing to HOA’s and he shot back, “Why would you want to work for those miserable people”. The thought brought a chuckle because I knew exactly what he was thinking – HOA’s are a lot tougher venue than a single family home.
Why HOA’s are Tough
When you work for a single owner you can educate the client easily and effectively about such things as frequency of service, products and what to expect after an application or you can adjust you service to better suit their needs. But with hundreds – as with a HOA - each owner has a different style of communicating and each one has an adjustment to make to your service. I call this the “Moving Target” – it is impossible to hit.
Solving the Problem of a Moving Target
Over the years of working with HOA’s I have learned an effective strategy for eliminating the moving target presented by multiple owners. First and foremost the service is to be quality. A high quality service provides a high quality results – few can argue or complain against the merits of paying for and retaining quality service providers. Second, I insist on a single spokesperson for the entire community – the president, garden chair, property manager, etc. A spokesperson can speak in one voice for the community and allows for easy communications and ability to adjust my service for a single goal.
This simple strategy was developed after years of working with many associations. From waterfront properties and resorts to midtown condos the strategy works. And once the moving target is eliminated I can use my education and experience to keep the lawn and landscape a lush, green welcoming setting for your HOA.
