Best Crab Grass Control: Remove and Replace

Crab grass is persistent, aggressive and there is no effective control. For years there were some very effective herbicides but they are now ineffective because application rates have been cut in half by regulations.

Crabgrass in a St Augustine Lawn

Cause of Crab Grass

Crab grasses like it hot and dry – St Augustine like it hot and wet. In water stressed areas St Augustine grass declines and crab gass increases. Crab grass often starts on the edges along masonry surfaces or in droughty areas of the lawn where water stress is common. An irrigation failure is often all that is needed to encourage crab grass to occupy an area of the lawn.  Once established, crab grass waits until further stress strikes the St Augustine and increases its’ territory. The once per week watering policies of SFWMD give great advantage to crab grass and make recovery nearly impossible.

Solution: Cure the Cause

Make sure the irrigation system is operating and covering all areas of the lawn. Look for broken, malfunctioning or blocked sprinkler heads. Often small localized droughty soil conditions are caused by sub-surface issues - everything from buried concrete or shell to an old tree stump.  Probing with a shovel will help to determine the cause. Once you have cured the cause you can remove the crab grass and replace with St Augustine grass.

Best Solution for Crabgrass is Remove and Replace

Remove and Replace

Small areas can be dug out with a shovel. Firm and level the  soil to the final grade of about 1” below existing soil. Apply a starter fertilizer with a pre-emergent herbicide. Broadcast the fertilizer/herbicide combo beyond the area repaired by 2 to 3 feet (this prevents “leaching” of the fertilizer from the new sod). Then add your new sod, making sure to have good contact with soil. Tip: The number one determining factor for the success or failure of your new sod is WATER! Water every day for a month and then at least weekly thereafter.
